FC Twente — Last 6 matches
FC Volendam — Last 6 matches

FC Twente welcome FC Volendam to De Grolsch Veste on Friday evening in the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie, and the gap between the two clubs in the table tells its own story. John van den Brom’s side are sitting pretty in fourth with 50 points, right in the hunt for European qualification and still not fully out of the conversation for a top-three push if results go their way. Volendam, under Rick Kruys, are down in 14th with 28 points and looking over their shoulder more than anything else. Mid-table security is there, but only just. This is a fixture with very different pressures attached to it.

For Twente, every home game from here matters. They’ve been strong enough at the top end of the division to make their own plans, but there’s no room for slipping up against sides from the lower half if they want to keep that European position intact. Volendam arrive knowing a point would feel like a proper result. A win? That would be huge. But away from home, they’ve barely laid a glove on anyone this season. That’s the reality.

The context is pretty plain. Twente are chasing something meaningful, Volendam are trying to steady themselves. And the way both teams have been playing, the goals should come.

FC Twente Form & Analysis

Twente come into this on the back of a statement win at Ajax, and that matters. They went to Amsterdam on 4 April and came away with a 2-1 victory, a result built on a composed away performance rather than chaos. Ramiz Zerrouki struck early, Wout Weghorst levelled things up, and Bart van Rooij settled it late on. That’s a proper away scalp. It wasn’t a smash-and-grab either. Twente were efficient, brave enough to keep pushing, and good enough to make their chances count.

That followed another away win at Fortuna Sittard, also by 2-1, and before that they did suffer a 2-0 home loss to FC Utrecht. But that defeat now looks more like a bump than a turn in the road. Before Utrecht, Twente had beaten Go Ahead Eagles 4-1 away, Feyenoord 2-0 at home, and Groningen 2-1 at home. That’s four wins in their last six league matches, and the only real blot in that run was the Utrecht setback. Three goals here, two there, four away at Deventer. They’re finding ways to score against all kinds of opposition.

At De Grolsch Veste, the numbers are solid rather than spectacular: seven wins, four draws and three losses from 14 league games, with 22 scored and 14 conceded. That’s a strong enough base, even if it doesn’t scream total dominance. They’ve generally controlled home matches well, but not always ripped teams apart. Still, a return of 22 goals at home is healthy. Twente don’t need many chances to hurt teams, and they’ve been sharper in the final third than Volendam have been all season. One thing to keep an eye on is the clean-sheet issue — they’ve gone four games without one in the league — but with their attacking rhythm, that’s hardly fatal.

The bigger picture is encouraging for Van den Brom. Twente are creating enough, and they’re doing it against decent opposition too. A side sitting fourth in the table doesn’t stay there by accident. They’ve got bite, balance and a habit of responding well after setbacks. That’s a useful combination.

FC Volendam Form & Analysis

Volendam arrive in North Brabant on the back of a decent point against Feyenoord, but don’t let the 0-0 fool you into thinking the wider picture is rosy. It was a respectable clean sheet on 5 April, and they deserved credit for staying organised against one of the league’s strongest sides, yet it still leaves them without a win in five. That’s the awkward truth. Before Feyenoord, they’d lost 2-0 at Sparta Rotterdam, gone down 2-1 at home to Fortuna Sittard, and been beaten 3-0 away by NEC Nijmegen. The one victory in their last six came at home to Groningen, 3-2, and even that was a game where they made hard work of it.

Rick Kruys’ team are a club surviving rather than thriving right now. Their league record tells the same story: seven wins, seven draws and 15 defeats, with 30 goals scored and 48 conceded. Away from home, it’s even harsher. One win, two draws and 11 defeats from 14 matches, with only seven goals scored and 29 conceded. That’s grim. Just seven away goals in the league all season. You don’t need a calculator to know that’s a problem.

Can they make life awkward for Twente? Sure, for spells. The draw with Feyenoord showed they can still sit in, stay compact and frustrate a better side when the game suits them. But that’s very different from surviving 90 minutes in Enschede. Away from home, Volendam have been too easy to pin back and too blunt when they do break out. They’ve also failed to score in three of their last five league matches, which only sharpens the concern around this trip. A team with that record simply doesn’t travel well.

They’re not without fight. Mind you, fight isn’t the same as control. And against a Twente side that’s scored freely at home and away in recent weeks, Volendam are going to need far more than resilience to come through this with anything.

Head-to-Head

Twente have had the better of this fixture for years, and the recent meetings make that very clear. They hammered Volendam 7-2 at home in May 2024, won 2-0 away in September 2023, and beat them 3-0 in Enschede back in February 2023. Volendam did edge the meeting in August 2022, winning 1-0 at home, but that’s the exception rather than the rule.

The most recent clash finished 1-1 in Volendam in November 2025, and that’s worth mentioning because it shows the underdogs can occasionally make Twente work for it. Still, Twente are unbeaten in four against them and have consistently found a way to create the better chances. Volendam, for their part, have gone four straight head-to-head meetings without a clean sheet. That feels relevant here.

We Predict: Over 2.5 Goals

We’re backing Over 2.5 Goals at 1/3 for this one. It’s short, yes, but it’s also the clearest route through the game. Twente have been scoring with real consistency, both at home and on the road, while Volendam’s away record is full of holes and their defending has been far too generous for most of the season. If this turns into the kind of match their records point toward, three goals should arrive without too much drama.

The expected flow is straightforward enough. Twente should spend long spells in control, Volendam probably won’t keep them out for 90 minutes, and there’s enough about the visitors to suggest they can nick something themselves — especially with Twente having gone four games without a clean sheet in the league. A 2-1 Twente win feels right. That scoreline fits the form, fits the table, and fits the matchup. If you want a secondary angle, Twente to win is the safer match-result lean, but the total goals market is the stronger call.
