Sunday’s French Ligue 1 action features an exciting clash between Lille and Nantes. The last season was a fantastic one for ‘The Great Danes’ who finished second in the league and will start their participation in Champions League from the group stage. Lille had a phenomenal attack and scored 68 goals. A significant reason for this impressive number was Nicolas Pépé. However, the talented winger left the team and signed with Arsenal, and will be interesting to see if ‘The Great Danes’ will be able to replace him adequately. Lille attracted Timothy Weah from PSG, but the youngster will have to prove himself.
Nantes had a tough season not only on the pitch but also outside of it after Emiliano Sala’s tragedy. However, ‘The Canaries’ finished the season well and lost only once in the final eight fixtures, which guaranteed them a spot at the middle of the table. The big problem ahead of Nantes is the lack of proven goal-scorers. Kalifa Coulibaly was the only striker that left a good impression with his nine goals.
In recent years Lille are dominating over Nantes, and it will be a miracle if ‘The Canaries’ took something of the clash with ‘The Great Danes’. Nantes have scored in just two of the last nine fixtures as guests of Lille. I expect a similar scenario on Sunday. During the previous season, Lille were the second-best hosts in league with only 11 conceded goals, while Nantes scored just 13 goals in their away games.
