NK Lokomotiva Zagreb — Last 6 matches
NK Istra 1961 — Last 6 matches

NK Lokomotiva Zagreb host NK Istra 1961 in the HNL on Saturday evening, 11 April 2026, with both sides still chasing something meaningful in the closing stretch of the season. Lokomotiva sit eighth on 31 points and are trying to drag themselves clear of the lower half, while Istra arrive in fifth with 36 points and an eye on protecting their position in the top section of the table. It’s not a title race, but it matters. A lot.

There’s also a nice bit of edge to this one. Lokomotiva have been stuck in a frustrating run without a win, while Istra have been the more productive side over the season and have generally handled away trips better than most in the division. They met as recently as 30 January, a 1-1 draw in Pula, and there’s no shortage of recent history to suggest this could be another awkward, tight evening. Yet the scoring patterns point the other way. Goals usually turn up when these two get together.

For Nikica Jelavić’s side, the concern is simple: they’re playing decent enough football in patches, but they’re not turning those spells into victories. For Oriol Riera’s Istra, the question is whether they can turn a solid away record into something more imposing here. That’s the tension. One side needs a lift, the other needs to avoid a flat spot.

NK Lokomotiva Zagreb Form & Analysis

Lokomotiva’s recent run has been all about near misses and wasted moments. They came away from HNK Vukovar 1991 on 7 April with a 1-1 draw, and there was at least some resilience in that result after a poor spell. Leon Belcar and Vito Čaić got on the scoresheet, but the performance metrics were not especially convincing: a low xG, few shots, and a game that never really looked under control. Before that, Dinamo Zagreb came to town and blew them apart 5-0. That was the sort of night that lingers.

Go back a little further and the picture is similar. A 2-1 defeat at Hajduk Split on 15 March, a 1-1 draw away to Slaven Belupo in the cup, another 1-1 at home to Varaždin, and a 2-0 defeat at Rijeka. They’ve now gone six league games without a win, and that’s the blunt truth of it. There’s been enough fight to avoid complete collapse, but not enough quality to control matches or finish them off. The last time they won was on 21 February, when they beat Osijek 3-1 at home. Since then, it’s been scraps rather than momentum.

At home, though, Lokomotiva are at least respectable. Their league record at this ground reads six wins, four draws and four defeats, with 19 goals scored and 20 conceded. That’s not spectacular, but it’s good enough to suggest they’re awkward opponents in Zagreb. The issue is that they haven’t made the ground feel like a fortress. A side conceding at roughly a goal per home game can keep itself alive, but it leaves very little room for error. And Lokomotiva do make errors. They’ve gone eight matches without a clean sheet, which is exactly the sort of streak that keeps dragging them back into trouble.

There is one positive they’ll lean on here: they usually find a way to contribute in front of goal at home. The problem is keeping the back door shut long enough to let that count for something. Against Istra, that balance matters more than ever. If Lokomotiva can’t raise their tempo and protect the box a little better than they did against Dinamo or Rijeka, they’ll be relying on scraps again. That rarely ends well.

NK Istra 1961 Form & Analysis

Istra arrive with a slightly stronger season behind them, but their form hasn’t been clean either. Their last outing ended in a 3-1 home defeat to Hajduk Split on 7 April, and the scoreline was rough enough to reflect the balance of play. Marko Livaja scored twice for Hajduk, Adrion Pajaziti added another, and Istra were left chasing the game almost from the start. The xG numbers were ugly too. They didn’t create nearly enough, and they were picked off far too easily when Hajduk broke through the lines.

Still, there’s a more encouraging result in the mix. On 15 March they went to Rijeka and won 2-0, which is no small thing. That result came between a 2-1 home win over Varaždin and a string of defeats, and it showed what Istra can do when they’re compact and direct. They’re not a side that dominates the ball for long spells. They’re better when they’re disciplined, patient, and ready to pounce. The problem is that those good spells are too often isolated. Before the Rijeka win came a home defeat to Osijek, then an away loss at Slaven Belupo, then another home defeat to Gorica. A win here and there, but not much of a run.

On the road, Istra have been better than their overall record might suggest. Their away numbers stand at five wins, two draws and seven defeats, with 19 scored and 21 conceded. That’s a very respectable return for a side sitting 3rd in the away table, and it tells you they’re not shrinking when they leave home. They’re also capable of scoring in tricky places. The flip side? They’ve still lost seven away games, so this isn’t some ironclad travelling unit. They can be opened up. That’s what makes them vulnerable against an opponent like Lokomotiva, who usually manage to create enough at home to get a foothold.

Oriol Riera’s side do have one trend that stands out: they’ve often been the ones to concede first, and that habit can force them into awkward, open games. They’ve got enough quality to recover in some matches, but if Lokomotiva strike early, this could get loose in a hurry. Mind you, Istra don’t need a lot of invitation to score themselves. Their season average away numbers are modest rather than imposing, yet they’ve still done enough to keep themselves in the upper half of the table. That’s what makes them dangerous. They’re not flashy. They just tend to be there.

Head-to-Head

The recent meetings between these two have carried a real pattern, and it’s hard to ignore. The January 30 clash ended 1-1, while Istra beat Lokomotiva 2-1 in Zagreb on 25 October 2025. Go back further and you find a 2-2 draw in Pula on 9 August 2025, a goalless stalemate in Zagreb in May, and another Istra win in February 2025. In fact, Istra haven’t lost to Lokomotiva in seven straight meetings.

That recent edge matters, even if it doesn’t guarantee anything on Saturday. These are usually tight enough to stay alive deep into the second half, but they’re rarely dull. Five of the last seven H2Hs have featured both teams scoring, and five have gone over 2.5 goals. So while the January meeting finished level, it was still another game where both attacks had their say. That’s the sort of history that keeps the door open for goals here, even if the standings suggest a cagey contest.

We Predict: Over 1.5 Goals

We’re backing Over 1.5 Goals at 2/7 for this one, and that price looks fair enough. These two don’t need much encouragement to get past a single goal each, and the combination of Lokomotiva’s shaky clean-sheet record and Istra’s habit of finding a way through away from home points strongly toward at least a couple of goals.

Lokomotiva have gone eight matches without a shutout, Istra have scored in enough away fixtures to stay dangerous, and the recent head-to-heads have been full of goal action more often than not. A 2-1 Lokomotiva win feels like the cleanest scoreline read, mostly because Istra’s away form keeps them live while Lokomotiva’s home record gives them a decent chance of nicking one. If you want a slightly bolder angle, both teams to score also has a strong case, but Over 1.5 is the safer route.
