Preston North End — Last 6 matches
West Bromwich Albion — Last 6 matches

Preston North End host West Bromwich Albion at Deepdale on Saturday evening in a Championship meeting that matters more for pride and momentum than promotion fireworks, but there’s still plenty on the line. Preston sit 13th on 57 points and have been stubbornly competitive for most of the season, while West Brom are down in 21st on 46 points and are still trying to drag themselves clear of a disappointing campaign. For both clubs, a strong finish matters. For one, it’s about ending in the top half with some authority; for the other, it’s about stopping the slide and restoring a bit of credibility.

This is also a game with a bit of tactical texture to it. Preston have been steady at home without being spectacular, while West Brom’s away record has been a problem all season. That contrast should shape the evening. The visitors have drawn a lot of matches, and not all of them have been boring, but they’ve also struggled to turn decent spells into wins. Preston, under Paul Heckingbottom, have been more decisive at Deepdale than they’ve been on the road. James Morrison’s side arrive with a point to prove, but they’ll need to show a level of cutting edge they’ve often lacked away from home.

Preston North End Form & Analysis

Preston’s recent run has had a bit of everything. They went to Charlton Athletic on 11 April and came away with a 2-1 win, a result that snapped them back into a more positive groove after a messy spell. Before that, they drew 1-1 with Queens Park Rangers at home and came out of Leicester City with a 2-2 draw, which is the sort of result that tells you they can stay in games against stronger opposition. That said, the trip to Norwich City on 14 March was a flat one, ending in a 2-0 defeat, and the 3-0 loss at Coventry City before that was even harder to swallow. Then came the response: a 3-1 home win over Stoke City. That’s Preston in a nutshell right now. Capable, awkward, and rarely dull.

At Deepdale, the record is decent rather than dazzling: eight wins, seven draws and six defeats, with 27 goals scored and 25 conceded. They’ve turned home matches into scrappy, competitive contests more often than not. They don’t steamroller opponents. They work them over. The balance is fine, and the goals-for and goals-against figures are close enough to suggest there’s not much between a good Preston performance and a frustrating one. They’ve also gone four matches unbeaten since their loss at Norwich, which gives them a sense of steadiness heading into this one. They’re not in a rush to open up, but they’ve got enough about them to nick points in this kind of fixture.

The key thing with Preston is that they’ve been involved in plenty of games where both sides find a way through. Their recent 2-1 win at Charlton and the 2-2 draw at Leicester are signs of a side that can score, but also one that leaves space behind. Still, they won’t fear West Brom’s attack. Not at home. And if they can keep this game at their tempo, they’ve got a real chance of taking something from it. One point, at least, feels well within reach.

West Bromwich Albion Form & Analysis

West Brom arrive with a different sort of recent story. They’ve only lost once in their last seven league matches, which sounds healthy enough, but the problem is that wins have been hard to come by. Their last six have produced three draws in a row against Millwall, Blackburn Rovers and Wrexham, all by very different means but with the same basic frustration: they’re not killing games off. The goalless draw at home to Millwall on 10 April was especially familiar. Plenty of effort, not much reward. Before that, they’d gone to Blackburn and also drawn 0-0, which underlined the same issue on the road. They’re competitive, certainly. Ruthless? Not really.

There have been some brighter moments in there. A 1-0 win at Bristol City on 21 March was a proper away effort, and the 3-0 home win over Hull City a week earlier showed what they can do when they click. Even the 1-1 draw with Southampton at home had something about it. But the margins are thin, and that’s why they sit 21st. Their overall numbers are rougher than Preston’s — 11 wins, 13 draws and 18 defeats, with 42 goals scored and 56 conceded — and the away record is a major part of that problem. Four wins, four draws and 13 defeats on the road. Just 17 goals scored and 31 conceded away from home. That’s relegation-form territory.

Mind you, West Brom don’t usually roll over. They’re awkward, hard to separate, and often good for a scrap. Their recent run without defeat has given them some resilience, but the last three outings have also shown a side lacking the final touch. Can they sharpen up at Deepdale? That’s the question. On current evidence, you’d fancy them to stay in the contest. You wouldn’t trust them to win it.

Head-to-Head

This fixture has leaned West Brom’s way for a while. They’ve gone six meetings without losing to Preston, and that matters when you’re trying to work out the mood around a game like this. The most recent clash, at The Hawthorns on 18 October 2025, ended 2-1 to West Brom, while they also beat Preston 3-1 in both January 2025 and May 2024. Go back further and the pattern stays familiar. West Brom won 4-0 at Preston in September 2023, and there’s another 2-0 away win in the mix too. Preston’s last positive result in this sequence was a 1-1 draw at Deepdale in November 2024, so they’ve at least shown they can avoid total collapse.

There’s also a clear trend in the scoring pattern. These games haven’t been cagey little chess matches. Four of the last five meetings have gone over 2.5 goals, and both sides have often found themselves in open territory. That said, the history is one thing and the present is another. West Brom have had the upper hand here for years, but this Preston side are a tougher home proposition than some of those older results suggest.

We Predict: Double Chance 1X

We’re backing Double Chance 1X at 8/11 here. It’s a fair price for a Preston side that’s been solid enough at home and has lost only once in four league games, especially against an away team that’s won just four times on the road all season. West Brom are tough to beat in the abstract, but they don’t travel well and they’re coming off a run of three straight draws. That’s not the profile of a side you want to trust away from home.

The 1-1 correct score looks the likeliest outcome. Preston have enough to score, West Brom have enough structure to keep this from becoming a one-sided game, and both teams have been living in that narrow-margin space for weeks. If you want a little more juice, both teams to score has a decent shout too, but the safer call is Preston avoiding defeat. That’s the angle.
