Bastia — Last 6 matches
Saint-Étienne — Last 6 matches

Bastia host Saint-Étienne in Ligue 2 on Saturday evening, 18 April 2026, and the contrast between the two clubs could hardly be sharper. Bastia are scrapping to avoid the drop, sitting 18th on 21 points after a bleak run of just three wins all season, while Saint-Étienne arrive in second place with promotion still firmly in their sights. One side is fighting for survival. The other is trying to keep pressure on the top of the table.

For Bastia, this is the sort of fixture that can quickly turn tense if they fall behind early. Reginald Ray’s team have spent most of the campaign chasing shadows, and their home record says it all: only two wins at their own ground, eight goals scored, and 21 conceded. Saint-Étienne, under Philippe Montanier, travel with real authority. They’re third in the away table, have lost only four times on the road, and their overall profile is that of a side built to control matches rather than survive them.

There’s a little extra edge here because Bastia and Saint-Étienne have already been through some lively meetings in recent seasons. The last clash finished 2-2 in Saint-Étienne in December, but the visitors have generally had the better of this pairing. Bastia need a result badly. Saint-Étienne need to keep their promotion push moving. That usually brings a clear shape to the game.

Bastia Form & Analysis

Bastia’s recent run has been grim, and there’s no way to dress it up. Their last six league games have brought three draws and three defeats, with the latest a wild 4-3 loss away to Red Star FC on 11 April. Even that result carried a familiar Bastia theme: they can stay in games, they can score in bursts, but they rarely control anything for long enough to protect themselves. Before that came a 1-1 draw at home to Amiens SC, another 1-1 at Rodez AF, then a 0-1 home loss to US Boulogne Côte-d’Opale, a 2-2 draw at Pau FC and a 0-2 defeat at home to Annecy FC. Winless in 11 now. That’s a painful stretch. Really painful.

The home record explains why they’re in trouble. Bastia have only two home wins all season, and their 8-21 goal difference at home is the sort of return that leaves no margin for error. They’ve been short on clean sheets, short on control and short on punch. Scoring eight at home across the campaign is far too little, especially when they’re conceding more than two per game there. You don’t have to dig deep to see the problem. They’re too easy to unsettle, and when the first goal goes against them, the response tends to be frantic rather than composed.

Still, Bastia aren’t completely toothless. Their recent results show they can find a way through, even if the overall balance is shaky. They scored three at Red Star, twice at Pau and once against Amiens and Rodez. That’s something. But the trade-off has been brutal at the other end, and that’s why this team often feels one defensive wobble away from falling apart. They’ve also been first to concede far too often, and when they don’t start well, the game slips away from them quickly. Against a top-two side, that’s a dangerous habit.

Saint-Étienne Form & Analysis

Saint-Étienne come in looking far more settled, even if their recent results haven’t been all one-way traffic. They beat USL Dunkerque 2-1 at home on 11 April, came from a different sort of battle in a 1-1 draw at Nancy, and before that thumped Annecy FC 4-0 at home. That was followed by a goalless draw at Grenoble Foot 38, a controlled 2-0 win over Red Star FC, and an excellent 3-0 victory at Pau FC. Five wins from six if you look back a little further. Nine league matches unbeaten overall. That’s the sort of consistency you want from a side chasing promotion.

What stands out with Saint-Étienne is how rarely they let games drift. Against Dunkerque they posted 20 shots to six and finished with seven on target. They were the better side, they pushed hard, and even when the match tightened up they still found a way through. That’s been a theme. Philippe Montanier’s side don’t need chaos to win. They’re comfortable dominating territory and creating enough chances to force the issue. With 53 goals scored and only 31 conceded across the season, they’ve got the numbers of a team that belongs near the top.

Their away form is strong too. Seven wins, four draws and only four defeats on the road is a serious return. Saint-Étienne have scored 19 away goals and conceded just 16, which tells you they’re difficult to break down and efficient when they do attack. They’re not reckless travellers. They don’t need to be. They’ve got enough structure to avoid being dragged into a scrap, and enough quality to punish sides like Bastia when the home team start chasing the match. That’s the key here. If Saint-Étienne score first, Bastia’s shape could unravel very quickly.

Head-to-Head

These two have had a few lively contests, and the recent history leans Saint-Étienne’s way. They drew 2-2 in Saint-Étienne in December 2025, which was an open game, but that’s almost the exception rather than the rule. Before that, Saint-Étienne beat Bastia 4-0 at home in March 2024 and 3-2 in Saint-Étienne in December 2023. Bastia’s best recent answer came in January 2023, when they won 2-0 at home. That’s been a rare bright spot for them in this pairing.

The broader pattern is hard to ignore. Saint-Étienne have avoided defeat in the last three meetings, and Bastia have gone three head-to-heads without a clean sheet. That fits the wider feel of the fixture. Bastia can find moments, but Saint-Étienne usually land the cleaner punches. You’d expect the visitors to carry that edge again.

We Predict: Double Chance X2

Double Chance X2 at 1/4 looks the right call here. Saint-Étienne are too stable, too high in the table and too strong away from home to trust Bastia with the upset. The home side’s 11-match winless run is the big red flag, and their record at home is just as bleak. Saint-Étienne, by contrast, are unbeaten in nine and have already shown they can manage difficult away trips without losing control.

The cleanest read is a Saint-Étienne game without a lot of risk. Bastia may nick a goal — their recent results suggest they can find a moment or two — but the visitors should have enough to avoid defeat. A 1-1 scoreline feels live, especially with Bastia’s habit of clinging on and Saint-Étienne’s recent run of controlled away performances. If you want a slightly more aggressive angle, Saint-Étienne draw no bet would be the natural alternative, but X2 is the safer, sharper fit.
