SC Paderborn 07 — Last 6 matches
1. FC Magdeburg — Last 6 matches

SC Paderborn 07 host 1. FC Magdeburg on Sunday afternoon in the 2. Bundesliga, and the table gives this one real weight. Paderborn are second and chasing promotion, while Magdeburg sit 15th and are trying to put enough daylight between themselves and the lower reaches of the division. Different missions, same urgency. That usually makes for a lively game.

For Ralf Kettemann’s side, this is about keeping the pressure on the leaders and protecting one of the strongest home records in the league. For Petrik Sander and Magdeburg, it’s more about momentum and survival than anything glamorous, but a positive result away to a promotion contender would do their confidence no harm at all. These are the sort of fixtures that can swing a season.

There’s also recent history to lean on. Paderborn have had the better of this pairing for a while, and the meetings rarely drift into chaos. That said, both clubs arrive with enough attacking punch to make the betting market sit up. Goals are on the agenda here. Usually are when these two meet.

SC Paderborn 07 Form & Analysis

Paderborn come into this match with a proper sense of control. Their last six league games have brought four wins and two draws, and the 2-0 victory away at Greuther Fürth on 5 April was a tidy reminder that they don’t need fireworks to get a result. Stefano Marino gave them the lead on 51 minutes and Filip Bilbija finished the job late on. Simple, efficient, job done. Before that, they edged Dynamo Dresden 2-1 at home, drew 2-2 at Arminia Bielefeld, and shared a 1-1 at home with Eintracht Braunschweig. The win at Kaiserslautern and the 5-2 home romp against Hertha earlier in the run tell the same story: Paderborn are carrying a threat almost every time they step on the pitch.

The numbers at home are strong enough to match the eye test. They’ve taken 29 points from 14 league matches at their ground, with nine wins, two draws and only three defeats. They’ve scored 27 and conceded 19 at home, which is a solid return for a side pushing at the top end of the division. That’s not the profile of a team hanging on. It’s the profile of one that usually gets on the front foot, keeps the tempo high and asks awkward questions of visiting defences. Their overall record is even better: 16 wins, six draws and six losses, with 47 scored and 31 conceded. They’re second for a reason.

There’s a nice bit of steel about them too. Paderborn are unbeaten in eight league matches, and they’ve avoided defeat since early February. That kind of run does more than pad a points tally. It changes the mood in the dressing room and gives them a calm edge in tight moments. Still, they aren’t immaculate at the back. They’ve conceded in enough games to keep opponents interested, and the 1-1 draw with Braunschweig and 2-2 at Bielefeld show they can be dragged into end-to-end spells. At home, though, they’ve usually had enough attacking quality to outlast the problems.

1. FC Magdeburg Form & Analysis

Magdeburg arrive with a lot less serenity, but their recent results do at least point to some fight. They thumped VfL Bochum 4-1 at home on 4 April, and that was no flat-track bully routine. They hit Bochum hard from the start and kept going, with Lubambo Musonda, Barış Atik and two from Mateusz Żukowski making the scoreline look very convincing. Before that, they also won 3-1 at Preußen Münster. Those two results came after a difficult spell, though, and that’s the part that still hangs over them. A 1-1 draw with Darmstadt was followed by defeats to Elversberg and Karlsruher SC, and the 5-3 loss at Schalke was one of those games where the defensive structure just fell apart. Eight goals conceded in two away losses. That doesn’t go away overnight.

Their league position reflects that inconsistency. Magdeburg are 15th with 30 points from 28 matches, and their overall goal difference is only slightly negative at 43 scored and 51 conceded. There’s attacking ability in this side — you don’t score 43 goals by accident — but the balance isn’t right often enough. The away record is a bit more respectable than the table position suggests: six wins, one draw and seven defeats from 14 trips, with 23 goals scored and 24 conceded. That’s a decent base, yet it also hints at a side that rarely controls games for long. They’re usually in them, but not always on the right side of them.

The flip side? Magdeburg have been hard to keep out. They’ve gone 11 straight matches without a clean sheet, and that alone makes the case for a goal-heavy afternoon. Even when they win, they tend to win in games that open up. The 4-1 against Bochum was a perfect example; the 3-1 at Münster wasn’t far behind. But their away record also includes the 5-3 defeat at Schalke and the 1-0 reverse at Elversberg, so you never quite know which version of Magdeburg will turn up. Can they keep it tight against a side as organised as Paderborn? History says probably not.

Head-to-Head

Paderborn have had Magdeburg’s number in recent meetings. The most recent clash ended in a 1-0 win for Paderborn in Magdeburg on 9 November 2025, following a 2-1 home victory for Paderborn in May of the same year. Before that, there were plenty of draws and narrow margins, which tells you this isn’t usually a runaway fixture. There’s rarely a gulf between them on the pitch.

The pattern is fairly clear, though. Paderborn are unbeaten in the last ten meetings, and Magdeburg have only kept one clean sheet across that stretch. That matters here because it fits the current form too. Paderborn tend to find a way, while Magdeburg tend to allow chances. The H2H also leans against a cagey 0-0 type of game. These matches have generally been close, but they’ve usually had enough life in them for at least a couple of goals.

We Predict: Over 2.5 Goals

We’re backing Over 2.5 Goals at 1/2 for this one. The price is short for a reason. Paderborn are second, sharp at home and in a long unbeaten run, while Magdeburg have become a team you can almost bank on to be involved in a messy, open game. One side is pushing for promotion, the other has conceded in 11 straight league matches. That’s not a cocktail for caution.

A 2-1 Paderborn win feels about right. The home side have enough control and enough quality to edge it, but Magdeburg’s recent pattern says they won’t just sit back and accept the script. Their away record is decent, they score goals, and Paderborn aren’t exactly immune to giving opponents a look-in. If you want a slightly bolder angle, Paderborn to win and both teams to score would have obvious appeal. Still, the main pick is the clean one. Goals should arrive.
