SC Freiburg — Last 6 matches
1. FC Heidenheim — Last 6 matches

SC Freiburg host 1. FC Heidenheim in the Bundesliga on Sunday afternoon, and the table tells you everything about the mood around this one. Freiburg are sitting eighth with 40 points, still chasing a strong finish and the outside chance of slipping back into the European conversation. Heidenheim, meanwhile, are down in 18th on 19 points. They’re staring at the wrong end of the division and every point now carries the weight of a survival six-pointer. This isn’t just a local league fixture. For one side it’s about momentum and Europe. For the other, it’s about staying alive.

There’s also a bit of fatigue-management theatre hanging over Freiburg’s week. Julian Schuster’s side were in Celta Vigo on Thursday night and came away with a 3-1 win that sent them into the next phase of the Europa League tie in fine style. That competition run has given them a different kind of edge, but it also means they’re carrying a heavier schedule than most. Heidenheim, under Frank Schmidt, arrive with a simpler brief: turn a decent recent home win into something away from home, where they’ve been dreadful all season. Can they finally travel? That’s the question.

This feels like one of those games where the numbers lean one way, the table leans another, and the atmosphere could still make it awkward. Freiburg have enough attacking punch at home to put Heidenheim under real pressure, while the visitors have shown enough in a couple of recent results to suggest they won’t just roll over. But away from home, they’ve been far too easy to play through. Three points for Freiburg would keep their season tidy. For Heidenheim, anything would be a scrap earned the hard way.

SC Freiburg Form & Analysis

Freiburg come into this off the back of a lively little run, and the confidence should be obvious. They’ve won five of their last six in all competitions, with the only slip coming in that 3-2 home defeat to Bayern München on 4 April. Before and after that, they’ve been sharp. They beat St. Pauli 2-1 away, then produced a clean and disciplined 3-0 home win over Celta Vigo in the Europa League. After Bayern, they responded by going to Mainz and grinding out a 1-0 Bundesliga win, before going back to Vigo on 16 April and winning 3-1. That’s not the profile of a side wobbling under pressure. That’s a team that’s found its rhythm.

At home, Freiburg have been solid rather than spectacular, and that’s been enough to keep them competitive. Their league home record reads seven wins, four draws and three defeats, with 26 goals scored and 19 conceded. They don’t turn every home match into a shootout, but they do enough to stay on the front foot. There’s a nice balance there. They can go direct when needed, they’ve got bodies arriving in the box, and they’ve been good at making the second half count. The 5-1 win over Genk, the 3-0 against Celta Vigo and even the narrow 2-3 loss to Bayern all point to the same thing: Freiburg aren’t passive at home. They play.

The slight concern is the defensive side. Freiburg have conceded 47 goals in the league overall, which is a chunky number for an eighth-placed team, and there’s always a sense that they’ll give the opposition a spell or two. Still, that home record is respectable, and the recent return of goals has mattered more than any lingering inconsistency. They’ve scored in almost all of the last six and, at this point, you’d expect them to find chances against a Heidenheim side that’s been leaking far too much. The numbers at home are good enough. The form is better than that.

1. FC Heidenheim Form & Analysis

Heidenheim’s recent form has been a mixed bag, though there are signs of life after a brutal winter stretch. Their last six league matches tell a story of a side that can compete for spells, then lose the thread. They beat Union Berlin 3-1 at home on 11 April, which was a proper lift after a 2-2 draw away at Borussia M’gladbach and a mad 3-3 home draw with Leverkusen. Before that came the painful bit: a 1-0 loss at Frankfurt, a 4-2 home defeat to Hoffenheim and a 2-0 away defeat to Werder Bremen. They’ve at least stopped the rot a little, but the season-long picture is still ugly.

Away from home, it’s been bleak. One win, two draws and 11 defeats is the kind of record that drags a team to the bottom regardless of what they do at home. Heidenheim have scored just 11 goals in 14 away league games and conceded 29. That’s not a touring side. That’s a side giving up territory and usually giving up chances too. They’ve taken points on the road only in isolated bursts, and even the better away performances tend to come with a compromise somewhere else. Can they keep it tight for 90 minutes in Freiburg? On current evidence, that looks unlikely.

There is a bit of attacking life in them, to be fair. Their 32 league goals aren’t nothing, and they’ve scored in enough recent games to suggest they can threaten if Freiburg overcommit. The problem is the back line. Heidenheim have conceded 64 league goals, and their overall defensive record is the real reason they sit 18th. Even the promising home win over Union Berlin had the familiar looseness attached to it. They can score. They can also unravel. That’s been the pattern all season, and it’s hard to see this trip breaking it.

Head-to-Head

These two have already built a decent little Bundesliga history, and Freiburg have had the better of it more often than not. The most recent meeting came on 6 December 2025, when Heidenheim won 2-1 at home. Before that, Freiburg beat them 1-0 in February 2025 and 3-0 away in September 2024. The 1-1 draw in May 2024 and Heidenheim’s 3-2 win in December 2023 fill out a rivalry that’s been competitive, but not especially kind to the away side on the Freiburg ground.

There’s one pattern that jumps out straight away: Freiburg usually get the first goal in this fixture. That matters here. If they do it again, Heidenheim will have to chase, and chasing away from home has been their undoing more often than not. Freiburg’s home control, plus Heidenheim’s habit of conceding first, points towards a game that opens up in the second half. That’s where the goals tend to come.

We Predict: Over 2.5 Goals

We are backing Over 2.5 Goals at 8/13 for this Bundesliga meeting. It’s a fairly natural angle when you line up Freiburg’s home profile against Heidenheim’s away fragility. Freiburg have gone over 2.5 goals in five of their last six, while Heidenheim have seen four of their last five clear that line too. Both teams can contribute, and both have been involved in games that lose shape once the first goal goes in.

The home side’s 26 goals at their own ground give this bet a strong base, and Heidenheim’s away record of 29 conceded tells you why this feels live. Freiburg should create enough to win it, but Heidenheim have scored in enough recent matches to keep the score moving. A 2-1 Freiburg win feels right, with the hosts controlling the key spells and the visitors nicking something late enough to make the total land. If you wanted a slightly safer route, Freiburg to win and over 1.5 goals would fit the same script — but the bigger total is the cleaner play here.
