Újpest — Last 6 matches
Nyiregyháza Spartacus — Last 6 matches

Újpest host Nyíregyháza Spartacus on Friday evening in NB I, and this one matters a lot more than a routine late-season fixture between eighth and ninth would suggest. Újpest sit 8th on 37 points, Nyíregyháza are just behind on 35, and with both clubs carrying the same goal difference of -6, the margin between them is wafer-thin. There’s no safety net here, no spare ground to give away. One good run can drag a side up the table quickly; one bad night can undo two months of work.

This is also a meeting between two teams that know how to make games open. Újpest have scored 40 and conceded 46 in the league, while Nyíregyháza have the exact same overall totals. That symmetry is almost too neat. It also hints at what kind of contest this could be: plenty of chances, a few shaky moments, and not much reason to trust either defence fully. The points are there for the taking, but neither side has been convincing enough to treat this as straightforward.

The recent run of meetings points the same way. The two clubs have already drawn 1-1 and 2-2 this season, and Újpest are unbeaten in the last five head-to-heads. That doesn’t scream domination. It screams tension, goals and a game that tends to stay alive right to the end.

Újpest Form & Analysis

Újpest arrive in reasonable shape, even if their season has never quite found a clean rhythm. Their last six league matches have been a proper mixed bag: a 3-0 away win at Kazincbarcikai SC on 11 April, a 2-2 draw with MTK Budapest at home on 4 April, a 2-0 defeat away to Zalaegerszegi TE on 21 March, a 2-1 home win over Kisvárda FC, a goalless draw at home to Paksi FC, and a 2-1 away loss to ETO FC Győr. That’s the story of their campaign in miniature. Bright in spells, capable of scoring, but rarely stable for long.

The Kazincbarcikai win was a sharp response to the defeat in Zalaegerszeg. They were good value too. The chance count, shot count and late third goal all pointed to a side with enough attacking threat to hurt weaker opposition. Then came the home draw with MTK, which told a different tale. Újpest led, let the game slip, and had to settle for a point. That’s been a recurring theme for them this season. When they’re on top, they don’t always kill teams off. When they aren’t, they can be dragged into a scrap.

At home, though, they’ve been respectable rather than comfortable. Their league record at this ground stands at five wins, four draws and six defeats, with 18 goals scored and 21 conceded. That’s not a fortress. Still, it’s not a bad base either. They’ve been competitive in most home games, and the scoring record is good enough to believe they’ll create something here. The problem is the same old one: they’ve conceded too freely to back them as a reliable shutout team. Three straight home matches without a win in the middle of the season would have worried them. Even now, they’re still searching for a sense of control.

There is a nice little streak worth keeping in mind. Újpest have gone over 2.5 goals in seven of their last nine league matches. That fits the eye test. They’re rarely boring, and they’re rarely airtight. If they score first, the game usually opens up. If they concede first, the urgency ramps up quickly. Either way, you’d expect chances at both ends.

Nyiregyháza Spartacus Form & Analysis

Nyíregyháza Spartacus come into this on the back of a proper statement result, beating Paksi FC 2-0 at home on 11 April. That was one of their better performances of the season. They didn’t just win; they controlled it. The 2.21 expected goals to 0.12 against is the sort of split managers love, because it says the performance wasn’t a fluke. Before that, though, the away defeat to ETO FC Győr on 5 April was a reminder that they’ve still got issues on the road when the pressure rises.

Their six-match sequence tells a fairly clear tale. They beat Paksi at home, lost at ETO, beat Diósgyőri VTK 3-1 at home, drew 1-1 away to Debreceni VSC, lost 3-1 at home to Ferencváros TC, and beat Puskás Akadémia 2-1 away. There’s good energy in that run. There’s also volatility. Nyíregyháza can look strong when the game suits them, especially when they’re able to play with some freedom. But when they’re forced to defend deeper for long spells, they’ve been exposed.

Away from home, the numbers are quite solid. They’ve taken five wins, three draws and six defeats on the road, scoring 19 and conceding 20. That’s a decent return. Not elite, but competitive. They’re clearly not a side that folds away from their own ground, and that makes them dangerous in this fixture. They’ve already won at Puskás Akadémia and picked up a draw in Debrecen, which tells you they can travel. The question is consistency. Can they do it two away trips running? That’s where the doubts start creeping in.

The attacking record is good enough to respect. Nyíregyháza have scored 40 goals overall, the same as Újpest, and they’ve usually found a way to get on the scoresheet even in tighter away games. At the same time, they’ve only kept a couple of clean-looking results recently, and they don’t have the sort of defensive profile that allows them to shut matches down for long periods. That’s why goals keep creeping into their games. They’re involved in them whether they want to be or not.

Head-to-Head

These two have developed a habit of producing scorelines that keep both benches uneasy. The last five meetings have brought a 1-1 draw in Nyíregyháza in January, 2-2 draws in both league meetings at Újpest in 2025, a 0-0 in February 2025, and a 1-0 Újpest win in October 2024. Go a little further back and there’s still plenty of evidence that this fixture tends to stay competitive and open rather than cagey.

The key pattern is simple enough. Újpest are unbeaten in the recent head-to-head run, but they’ve also struggled to put Nyíregyháza away. Four of the last five meetings have gone under three goals only once, and both teams have scored in eight of the last ten clashes. That’s not a one-off trend. It’s a proper feature of the pairing. Expect chances, and expect both sides to fancy their chances of landing one.

We Predict: Over 2.5 Goals

We’re backing Over 2.5 Goals at 5/6 here, and it’s a strong enough angle to trust. Both teams are level on 40 league goals this season, both have conceded 46, and neither defence has offered much reason to believe in a clean, controlled evening. Újpest’s home games have leaned lively, Nyíregyháza’s away matches haven’t been short on action, and the head-to-head record keeps pulling in the same direction.

A 2-1 home win feels the likeliest scoreline. Újpest have just enough home edge and a bit more recent rhythm, but Nyíregyháza’s away record is good enough to make this awkward. If the visitors score, which they’ve done often enough on the road, this total should sail. Even if they don’t get on the board early, the game still has the feel of one that opens up late.

If you want a slightly safer line, both teams to score is an obvious alternative. The only issue is the price. Over 2.5 Goals gives you the cleaner blend of form, matchup and recent history.
