Valencia — Last 6 matches
Real Madrid — Last 6 matches

Valencia host Real Madrid at Mestalla on Sunday evening in a fixture that pits survival against title ambition. Carlos Corberán's side sit 17th on 23 points, just one place above the relegation zone after five wins from 22 matches. Álvaro Arbeloa brings a Real Madrid side that trail leaders Barcelona by one point, having accumulated 54 points through 17 wins, three draws, and only two defeats. The visitors are heavy favourites, but Mestalla has a habit of producing tense, open encounters between these teams.

Valencia come into the match on a two-game losing streak. A 2-1 defeat at Real Betis on February 1 was followed by a painful Copa del Rey exit three days later, when Athletic Club scored a 96th-minute winner to seal a 2-1 quarter-final victory at Mestalla. That late gut-punch ended Valencia's run in the last remaining cup competition available to them. Before that, Corberán's men had picked up three straight wins — a 3-2 home thriller against Espanyol and clean-sheet victories at Getafe and Burgos. The gap between their best and worst remains wide, with a goal difference of minus 12 reflecting their defensive frailty throughout the campaign.

Real Madrid arrive with six consecutive LaLiga wins, though their recent form has been far from convincing. The 2-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano on February 1 needed a 100th-minute penalty after the hosts had squandered chance after chance. That game also saw a key midfielder leave the field after just 10 minutes with a suspected hamstring injury. Four days earlier, a 4-2 defeat at Benfica pushed Madrid out of the Champions League's automatic last-16 places and into the playoff round. Arbeloa, promoted from the Castilla coaching role in mid-January after Xabi Alonso's departure, has steadied results in the league but continues to face questions about his long-term suitability for the job.

These two clubs have met 214 times across all competitions, with Real Madrid winning 112 of those. In the last five LaLiga meetings, both teams have scored in four. The reverse fixture in November ended 4-0 to Madrid at the Bernabéu, but the previous visit to Mestalla in January 2025 was far tighter — a 1-2 away win decided by a late goal. Valencia even won 2-1 at the Bernabéu in April 2025, proving they can compete with Los Blancos when the occasion demands it.

My prediction is BTTS & Over 2.5 at 2.00. Valencia have conceded 35 goals in 22 league games while scoring 23, and Real Madrid's 47 goals scored against 18 conceded reflect a team that attacks freely but leaks at the back. Both teams scored in four of the last five league meetings at Mestalla between these sides. The xG projection (1.45–1.87) supports a 1-2 finish.
